Invasive Species Control - Man Spraying Japanese Knotweed
Spraying Japanese Knotweed

The threat from non-native invasive species is recognised national and inter-nationally under the European Union Directives, Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), International Plant Protection (IPPC), the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, and the EC Habitats and Species Directive.

The Environment Agency list a number of Invasive plant life that are non-native and cause a number of issues with existing native plant life and infrastructure.

The Environment Agency explain the effect of Invasive species:

"Invasive species upset the balance of the ecosystem as they may be bigger, faster growing or more aggressive than the native species. They may also have fewer natural predators to control numbers. The native species are often unable to compete and fairly quickly the invasive species take over."

The Belvedere Green links project has undertaken a survey of the Belvedere Employment area and Erith Marshes to find areas of invasive species.   Northwest Kent Countryside Partnership have conducted the survey and identified numerous areas of Invasive Species.  The most common invasive species found in the area are:

After conducting a small tender procedure we have appointed Invasive Vegetation Management to treat the identified areas of Invasive species.

The treatments are due for completion by March 2011 with various planned stages of vegetation clearance.  IVM are using a FAST system for treatment which allows for eradication in one growing season by using different application techniques.
